A new diet has surfaced in Canada! Our sister province of Manitoba proudly announces the "100 Mile Diet", whereby Manitobians are encouraged to take eat food grown within a 100 Mile radius of their own homes. The benefits of this diet are two fold. Not only are Manitobians being encouraged to support local area farmers, they are being instrumental in reducing the greenhouse gases produced as a result of long distance importation of produce and meat.

Supporting local area farmers takes a little bit of effort.  Good local produce can't be found at all grocery stores. I don't think (however, I could be wrong because I don't shop there often) that Big Guys...like Walmart and Costco carry local goods, and everytime we buy a chunk of meat or container of blueberries, we should be considering the source. Along with the source, also comes the pesticide policies of the originating Country. A very informative website is http://www.environmentalsciences.homestead.com/pesticides.html

Then of course we have the transportation and nutrition issues. I'm always boggled at the fact that the green peppers...picked in Mexico...look so good and perfect on the shelf a week or two later! I have not figured that one out yet!

There's no doubt that we could all benefit from the "100 Mile Diet" and I'd like to challenge Ontario to go on the diet! Freeze or can some local produce today! I have 2 area farmers that I buy my meat and chicken from...Like those characters on Sesame Street always said..."We are what we eat...from our head down to our feet"...Let's get healthy...and be satisfied that we're doing our small part in reducing greenhouse gases! Please feel free to post your favorite sources of locally grown food!
